At Match Skin Salon, we have a treatment option to suit you, whether your stretch marks are as a result of weight gain, pregnancy or puberty. Stretch marks are extremely common and can occur on any part of the body with both men and women. They appear commonly on the upper arms, stomach, breasts, thighs, buttocks, and anywhere the skin has stretched rapidly.

How Stretch Marks Occur

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are forms of scarring as a result of tearing of the thick layer of living tissue below the surface of the skin, dermis or epidermis. Rapid stretching of the skin leads to stretch marks, and it occurs during periods of rapid growth such as puberty, and periods of fast weight gain like in pregnancy or muscle building.

Therefore, stretch marks come about when any of these different factors occur, which damage or tear the dermis. When this elastic layer of skin becomes damaged, epidermis can lose shape, look sunken or raised, because the dermis (which is responsible in part for maintaining the shape of your skin) is damaged. Generally, stretch marks occur around the stomach, but they can appear anywhere on the skin. They are however mostly found around areas fat is stored by the body in large numbers.

The development of stretch marks are also caused by hormones called glucocorticoids. These affect the epidermis through the prevention of the formation of some essential components of the skin -collagen and elastin fibres – by fibroblasts. The skin is therefore unable to grow or stay firm and taut. Preventing the usual tasks of fibroblasts on the skin results in failure of the skin to produce supportive material. Therefore, the dermis tears and causes visible stretch marks on the epidermis.

Stretch Mark Removal for men

Rapid growth spurts and weight gain can result in stretch marks on men too. Unlike women however, excessive weightlifting can also cause stretch marks for men, especially when muscle mass is added too quickly. Our recommended procedures and stretch mark removal treatments work for men as much as women. It is essential that people with medical concerns consult their doctor before seeking treatment for their stretch marks.

Stretch Mark Removal Treatments

Diamond Peel Dermabrasion

This non-surgical procedure focuses on gently removing the dead skin cells on the topmost surface of the skin. This treatment is incredibly popular and effective, because of its immediate and long term results. During diamond peel dermabrasion, a very light abrasion is created, using a small stainless steel head, containing a miniature diamond grain. The levels of abrasion can be adjusted to match individual skin type and colour. The resulting effect is the emergence of newer skin cells that create a brighter, younger-looking skin.

Benefits include:

  • Treatment encourages cellular renewal and collagen production
  • Diamond grains safer than loose crystal-based systems
  • Practically eliminates risk of infection and scarring of the skin
  • Diamond heads provide treatment that is highly effective and superior yet less abrasive
  • Inter-changeable heads cater for different skin types and surfaces

Collagen Induction Therapy

This treatment is also known as skin needling or micro needling. Collagen induction therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to rejuvenate the skin. It is generally used to reduce the appearance of scars such as acne scarring, but can also be used to treat stretch marks. Both the Dermaroller and Dermapen™ are treatments that involve micro needling methods.

The Dermaroller is a device containing a wheel of micro needles that is rolled over the top layer of the skin to create a controlled trauma in the area. This micro-trauma stimulates collagen and elastin production in the deeper layers of the skin, which replaces the lost collagen in the stretch marks. Blood flow to the treated areas is also increased by the micro-trauma, which works to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and improve the skin texture.

The Dermapen™, which is considered by many as an effective and revolutionary treatment for stretch marks, is another micro-needling device. It is an effective alternative to the traditional Dermaroller. It makes use of a state of the art technology to tighten, lift and rejuvenate the skin. At Match Skin Salon, we provide treatments that make use of the Dermapen™ in order to help improve the body’s ability to naturally repair the epidermis, as well as the appearance of skin that has been affected by stretch marks.

Benefits include:

  • Simple to use
  • Fractional skin rejuvenation
  • Removes needle bending risk
  • Increased patient comfort
  • Reduced epidermal damage
  • Reduced downtime
  • Minimal aftercare and treatment costs

Advanced Laser Treatments

Two different types of laser treatments can be used to improve the appearance of stretch marks – IPL laser and the Fraxel treatment. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser can be used to reduce any redness present and control associated inflammation. The Fraxel laser is preferred for stretch marks that have faded to a silvery-white colour. The laser is known as Fraxel because it only targets areas of the skin, with a patented fractional technology that penetrates deep into the skin, leaving the surrounding skin free from harm.

Tiny wounds known as microtrauma are caused by the laser in the dermis. The microtrauma stimulates the production of collagen to help replace lost collagen in the stretch marks, and also reduce imperfections. With Fraxel treatment, stretch marks become narrower and the skin starts to assume a smoother appearance. After treatment, you may experience swelling or redness, depending on the level of treatment. These symptoms can be expected to subside in one to four days.

Cosmos TCA 18% Peel

Our Cosmos TCA peel 18% is an amazing treatment for stretch marks. The top layer of the skin is removed using a deep, exfoliating peel to reveal skin that is fresh and new, smooth stretch marks and make them less easy to spot. At least two to four peels are recommended to get the most effective results with this treatment. Immediately after treatment, the treated area will be a bit red and tender, because of the layers of skin that have been removed to allow the growth of new skin.

Carboxytherapy for Stretch Marks

Carboxytherapy is a highly effective method of treating both old and new stretch marks on different skin types. The method involves the injection of a tiny amount of CO2 gas into the part of the body affected by stretch marks. Since poor blood flow is one of the causes of stretch marks, the body is tricked by the CO2 to increase the flow of nutrients and oxygen to the area (red blood cells carry the excess CO2 to the lungs to be exhaled).

As a response, the body effectively restored the damage to the skin and repairs the collagen matrix for good. Usually, a single injection is enough to obtain results with the stretch marks. The number of sessions required will however depend on the severity of the marks.
